Going Global!

A seminar in Spui25 on Monday April 8 from 16.45 – 17.45 to present the ACGS to a wider public.

What role do the humanities play in globalisation research, and what role can they play? In his contribution, Jeroen de Kloet will give a short overview of the aims of the Amsterdam Centre for Globalisation Studies and discuss the five most pressing issues confronting current globalisation research. Esther Peeren will then discuss ‘living ghosts’; certain groups of people who are portrayed as ghostly, whereby the metaphor can signify both empowerment and dispossession. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s filmBabel (2006) is used to highlight the specific ‘spectral’ position of domestic workers within a globalising world.

Finally, by focusing on the work of American artist Alison Hildreth, Simon Ferdinand will show how her maps emphasise the point that – far from leading to a homogenous world – globalisation actually causes large inequalities over time.
